I appreciated their generosity in an additional started and dessert, so it was really 10 courses! The winners were the such I and bao bun. Cauliflower was highly anticipated , but a little disappointing. Save was a very knowledgeable server. Attentive but not intrusive. I will be back for the 5 course menu instead.

Set next to an art gallery and it’s sister restaurant Yama in Franschhoek, Ōku is a unique Asian fine dining restaurant. The space itself is warm and inviting with a cosy fire place and a sheek minimalist design.
As a diner it’s really difficult to find a place where you can enjoy your meal amongst other tables quietly and intimately, as many spaces nowadays are cramped with limited room.
Ōku sets itself apart by providing an experience where you can do this as the space in the restaurant is utilised to its greatest potential, truly living up to the restaurants name.
The service at the restaurant is remarkable, and even though you’re served by multiple waiters (who are all excellent) it doesn’t feel rushed. You are taken care of and can enjoy the amazing food.
We had the 11 course menu which sounds like a lot, but the portions are sized so that you can enjoy everything without feeling stuffed at the end.
Each course is beautifully presented without fuss or fancy tricks, making it so clean, elegant and refined. The menu has familiar dishes that are elevated and bring forth so much flavour in a single bite. My favourites were the lamb bao bun and the pork belly.
Ōku is definitely a place you should visit if you love Asian food and are looking for a fine dining take on it. Definitely a wonderful experience.

About Ōku

Cuisine: Japanese / Sushi, Vegetarian

Oku Franschhoek’s first Asian eatery

The highly anticipated opening of Ōku, the concept and vision of Chef/restaurateur duo Ryan Shell and Darren Badenhorst (Le coin Français, Le chêne and Tuk Tuk Microbrewery), is here.

The two acclaimed chefs, with over 30 years of hospitality experience, are pooling their culinary prowess to create Franschhoek’s first South East Asian eatery.

Total renovations of the interior and exterior ensure a purpose designed space to create a casual, calming and refined eating experience.

Conceptualised on a culinary exploration of Indonesia in 2013, Darren and Ryan were especially inspired by the Gili Islands.

The two chefs had ample time to refine the idea whilst working together to feed the Franschhoek community during the Covid-19 lock down period, resulting in a thoroughly conceptualised, authentic and flavour packed food and beverage offering.

Bookings essential to avoid disappointment.
