Food was disappointing - cold dishes were prepared early and felt like we were eating straight out of the fridge. A Kaiseki experience should be freshly prepared with specific taste enhancer experiences - focusing on distinct flavours and not overpowering.
Be vigilant if you have strict dietary requirements. They did apologize re-imburse us for this individual.

Each one plated up picture perfect and flavoured to perfection. A culinary journey of over three and a half hours. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, it had a wonderful ambience, staff were friendly, knowledgeable and always at hand. Highly recommended.
One of the best meals I have had in a long time. A journey for the the palate, and one I can't wait to experience again. The staff were lovely and the setting is intimate, allowing you to enjoy each course.
A group of us went for an 11 course tasting. All the plates were beautiful and had great flavours. The waiters were really efficient and seemed to know the perfect time to bring out the next plate without hovering. The decor is simple and environment calming. We got a couple extra unexpected treats which was a nice bonus.

About Ōku
Cuisine: Japanese / Sushi, Vegetarian
Oku Franschhoek’s first Asian eatery
The highly anticipated opening of Ōku, the concept and vision of Chef/restaurateur duo Ryan Shell and Darren Badenhorst (Le coin Français, Le chêne and Tuk Tuk Microbrewery), is here.
The two acclaimed chefs, with over 30 years of hospitality experience, are pooling their culinary prowess to create Franschhoek’s first South East Asian eatery.
Total renovations of the interior and exterior ensure a purpose designed space to create a casual, calming and refined eating experience.
Conceptualised on a culinary exploration of Indonesia in 2013, Darren and Ryan were especially inspired by the Gili Islands.
The two chefs had ample time to refine the idea whilst working together to feed the Franschhoek community during the Covid-19 lock down period, resulting in a thoroughly conceptualised, authentic and flavour packed food and beverage offering.
Bookings essential to avoid disappointment.
