Maybe the chefs could look at serving a hot plate of food, hate to have meal in winter.. I will be back and recommend the restaurant

Food was good but not extra-ordinary and all 3 meals could fit into one plate and one will still have lots of space - we understand that food are served into small portions when it is a bit more posh but this was ridiculously small e.g. starter was 3 ravioli's (filled with meat from the main dish), the main was only a piece of meat with no veg other than a thinly sliced apple-ring and two white dots on it and a miniature crackling, the ice-cream was delicious but the portion the size of a teaspoon - needed a second or third bite to make it memorable) .... definitely not an Italian 3-course luxurious experience.... the restaurant has nice décor but very neglected - e.g., plants all dead and can see some maintenance needed - the worst of all - paid +-R50 for a bottle of water and +- R28 for a soft drink- ridiculous. Gives the idea that they have to make up for the rent in a fancy area and can see why they were not fully booked. The waiter saved the day though as she did a good job. The main meal also did not have a vegetarian option. Enjoyed it as we celebrated our anniversary thus looked past it but would not recommend them to anyone else. We went to a very well-known posh place nearby with fancy and much nicer small (not tiny) portions for that price. I prefer smaller options but must still feel I had enough food -when we got home we still had to eat something, and I am not a big eater. Unfortunately, this also make one hesitant about the restaurant week - as it was not a special neither in the food or price.

The response- we don't give bread to restaurant week tables. Whaaaaaat? It was 3 little pieces of bread with herbed butter. Teeny tiny portions! And food arrived cold so we sent it back, it came back and it was still cold. Won't go back for a restaurant week.

We happened to meet both Jared (part-owner) and Brett (manager) on the night of our dinner at Sotto Sopra. They were both thoroughly entertaining and also very accommodating in making our meal a truly enjoyable one at that. The personal touch in having chatted with management on the night made one feel truly valued as a customer. The food was superb in both taste and presentation. The portion sizes were far smaller than expected (off expectations built-up over the years of our Restaurant Week experiences) - and were really more "tatsers" of each course, rather than a 3-course meal as defined. That said, I believe perhaps there was a miscommunication of sorts between how the Sotta Sopra menu was advertised on the Restaurant Week and how Jared (part-owner) expected it to be advertised. Outside of this, our experience was a truly enjoyable one at that - and the cocktails were ALL the MORE enjoyable! ;-)

About Sotto Sopra

Cuisine: Italian

Sotto is focused on providing an authentic Italian experience
Sotto is the cooler younger sister and extends the idea of the traditional Italian trattoria experience – serving Roman style (thin) pizza and handmade in-house pasta in a flamboyant, open and relaxing dining area – suitable for quick meetings, sundowners with colleagues or friends or a speedy lunch on-the-go.

Sopra
Sopra offers a luxurious dining experience. The area is decked with a luscious floor to ceiling plant wall, comfortable and cosy seating all behind glass doors that look out onto the buzzing city. It provides the perfect balance of great food and uber chic decoration.

Italian Food & Tradition
In Italian ‘Sotto’ alone means ‘Under’ and ‘Sopra’ means ‘On top’ and together the two words describe something being upside down or topsy turvy.

Sottosopra pays homage to a bold, dynamic, playful and colourful aesthetic. Plus add the glorious food.

Italian cuisine has influenced food culture around the world and is viewed as a form of art by many.

For Italians, food isn't just nourishment, it is life. "Family gatherings are frequent and often centered around food and the extended networks of families.”
